OpenVPN is an open source software application that implements virtual private network (VPN) techniques for creating secure point-to-point or site-to-site connections in routed or bridged configurations and remote access facilities.
- It uses a custom security protocol that utilizes SSL/TLS for key exchange.
- OpenVPN is available for mobile devices running Android and iOS, as well as desktop platforms including Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- OpenVPN offers two types of interfaces for networking services: a TUN (Layer 3) interface for general purpose routing and a TAP (Layer 2) interface for bridging.
- OpenVPN can run over User Datagram Protocol (UDP) or Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) transports, allowing it to be used with a wide variety of existing firewall rulesets.
